Save Money With A Car Extended Warranty

You know it and I know it - cars can be a huge expense.

Sadly, most people approach their cars with their hearts, not their brains.

I was one of those people.

For about 10 years, my method of handling my transportation was this:

  1. Buy a car, financing it over 3 years.
  2. Pay off the car.
  3. Trade it in for a new one.

I loved driving a new car all the time. I loved the fact that the manufacturer covered anything wrong with the vehicle during the three years I drove it. Who wouldn’t?

Nobody wants to deal with expensive car repairs. Paying for car repairs, especially the ones that come up because cars wear out, make you hate your car.

Then I got married to a wonderful woman who happened to have not just a great heart, but a pretty good brain as well - better than mine. She pointed out to me that my car buying habits meant that I was basically throwing money away, and that the next time I went to trade in my car she would be going with me.

Now, I’ve been a Honda guy for a long time. I love Honda vehicles. They aren’t too expensive and they’ve always been pretty reliable for me. They fit nicely into what I consider my price range for a vehicle.

My wife pointed out that for the same price as a brand-new Honda, I could be driving a BMW 5-class that was just a few years old, with less than 40,000 miles on it. As an added bonus, when I drove the BMW off the lot, it wouldn’t instantly lose 30% of it’s value like the new Honda did.

“Yeah, but what about the reliability? I don’t want to be paying for repairs on a BMW.” I asked.

“That’s what an extended warranty is for,” she replied.

Well, I’d never bought an extended warranty on a car before. My plasma, yes. My refrigerator, yeah. Cars….no.

But my wife worked it all out on an Excel spreadsheet. She showed me the numbers, and the numbers made sense. Driving a used car with an extended warranty, or a new car for a longer time while it’s covered by an extended warranty, saves our family buckets of money. I still trade my cars in, but I’m buying nicer cars than I did before. And with the extended warranty that I get with each car that I buy, I get peace of mind that when I need that car to go, it will go.

My wife and I have purchased extended warranties from a number of companies who sell them. We highly recommend Car Warranty Source. We have had absolutely no problems with them, and even the service guys we go to have nothing but good things to say about how fast they get paid.
